Academic Integrity Process Business

INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL OF BUSINESS FACULTY

As of July 1, 2008, all academic units at Rutgers University are operating under a university-wide academic integrity policy, which places the process of dealing with allegations of academic integrity violations with individual academic units, a practice that has been in place at Rutgers University–Camden for several years. All decisions, no matter what the level of the alleged violation, are made on our campus. The policy was last updated as of September 1, 2013.

The policy authorizes faculty members to investigate and sanction non-separable academic integrity violations (those that would not lead to a recommendation for suspension or expulsion), then report the sanction to the unit’s Academic Integrity Facilitator (AIF).  AI cases warranting suspension or expulsion must be adjudicated by an AIF. It should be noted that the procedure follows the school of the course, not the school in which the student is enrolled (for example, a School of Business student taking an economics course would be referred to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for investigation, not the School of Business). The faculty member should use the online Academic Integrity Initial Reporting Form to report the violation.

If the case is pending at a time when final grades are due, faculty are to assign the student a “TZ.”  The TZ may be changed once the responsibility and sanction, if applicable, are determined.

Faculty members adjudicating cases should follow the step-by-step procedure as set forth below:

·         Fill out and submit the Academic Integrity Initial Reporting Form

·         Send written notification to the student about the allegation of an academic integrity violation (use the template available here)

o    Note that it is imperative that you offer the student a chance to meet.  No decisions can be made about the student’s responsibility and sanction until the student has the opportunity to respond to the accusation.  Students have ten business days to respond to your initial notification.  If they fail to respond, you may make a decision regarding their responsibility and the sanction based on the evidence you have.

·         After the meeting, you must notify the student in writing either that 1) you found that no violation occurred (use the template available here) or 2) a violation occurred and that you have chosen a sanction (use the template available here).

·         Fill out, sign, and submit the Academic Integrity Final Reporting Form.

·         Submit all forms, letters, and supporting materials (e.g., the student’s paper and the sources s/he used) to Bridget Britton.

If the case involves possible suspension or expulsion, the Academic Integrity Facilitator (AIF) must adjudicate the case. The faculty member should follow the step-by-step procedure as set forth below:

·         Fill out and submit the Academic Integrity Initial Reporting Form

·         Send written notification to the student about the allegation of an academic integrity violation (use the template available here)

·         Submit all forms and supporting materials (e.g., the student’s paper and the sources s/he used) to Bridget Britton.

School of Business faculty can direct questions about the policy or procedures to Dr. Chester Spell, who is the unit’s Academic Integrity Facilitator.

Faculty can also direct questions to the Dean of Students Office. In addition, please note that there is an appeal process available to students, which is administered on the campus.
